Having an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on site is a critically important decision for a club to make.

In the first part of this series, it was established that having an AED can dramatically increase the chances of survival of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

The second part of the series discussed a range of benefits for clubs in having an AED onsite.

In the final of this three-part series, ClubTIC and the AED Authority highlight real-life examples where having a defibrillator on hand made all the difference.

Recently, hotelier Brian Evans experienced an SCA when at his previous pub in Victoria’s Welshpool.

Fortunately, an AED was on hand and bystanders quickly rushed to his aid. After three shocks, Evans was revived – prior to the arrival of the paramedics.

There is no doubt in his mind that his life was saved due to the AED.

Now, after a full recovery, Evans runs the Royal Hotel in Grong Grong NSW.

Similarly, a few years ago a defibrillator saved a man’s life when he collapsed on the green at Walpole Country Club.

Like the previous story, bystanders rushed to his aid, saving his life after they used the club’s AED.

AED Authority’s Grant Thompson highlighted the importance of having AEDs in clubs and pubs.

“They are designed to be simple and easy to use by anyone. No medical training is required. Having one of these life-saving devices in your pub, bar, or hotel means you could potentially save the life of a loved one, mate, or patron,” he said.

A club’s decision to install an AED can be a life-changing decision. It is a practical and compassionate response to any public venue’s duty of care. Further information on defibrillators can be found at healthdirect.
