Nestled in between social media posts from weekly specials to workshops, Whittlesea Bowls Club has begun sharing activities on Facebook that are a little more interactive than usual.

On the first of May this year, the club introduced a “brand new adventure”: Where in Whittlesea. The aim is to find a physical $100 club gift voucher hidden somewhere around the town of Whittlesea.

The post promised weekly clues each Monday until someone found the prize.

Those who figured out the clue and located the gift voucher were urged to post a photo to Facebook confirming where it had been hidden.

Since the inception the club has hidden four vouchers, with a fifth on the way.

These posts have gained more traction than any other, with followers excited for the next instalment.

While some commenters are just happy for the winners, others are excited to join in the fun.

“Love it! Definitely got us engaged and we have been in for a feed (which was lovely!),” said follower Nicole Maree.

Aside from the increase in online activity, Whilttlesea Bowls Club told PubTIC they were pleased with the physical engagement shown by the community.

“The Where in Whittlesea adventure has people out of the house and physically hunting, taking them to places they may not normally go,” said a club representative.

“Then of course they bring the money in and have a great night out.”

The promotion was conceived following casual conversations between staff and management.

Locations were scouted and clues were planned, and the first event was posted as a trial.

Hiding places were designed to be accessible at all hours and have so far included:

  • Eagles Nest Park, under a park bench
  • Whittlesea Visitor Centre, on the ramp leading up to the entrance
  • Whittlesea Community Garden, under the Lemon Tree Project sign
  • AF Walker Reserve, under the green post box

The last card was found before its first clue was posted.

“We have to get more creative with the hiding spots,” joked the representative.

The bowls club has been a Whittlesea stalwart since 1955.
