The second in this three-part series, ClubTIC continues its collaboration with the AED Authority to explore the life-saving benefits offered by defibrillators.

In part one, the case was put forward for the importance of having accessible Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in clubs.

The most obvious benefit is the dramatic potential to save a life. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can strike anyone, no matter their age or level of fitness.

As mentioned in part one, the chances of surviving an SCA increases dramatically once a defibrillator is used. While performing CPR is vital, an AED is the only way to restart a heart’s rhythm and is therefore a critical part of the standard DRSABCD protocol.

Fortunately, AEDs are designed to step any user quickly and simply through the process. The machines come with both simple graphics and easy-to-follow voice commands.

A first responder cannot harm the patient. AEDs will not work if the patient does not require a shock. First responders are also legally protected thanks to Australia’s Good Samaritan legislation.

Another crucial consideration is time. In Australian cities, the average time for an ambulance to arrive is ten minutes, and in rural areas can be much longer. When every minute without care significantly reduces a patient’s chance of survival, early intervention can buy time until help arrives.

Finally, being prepared for an SCA instils confidence in staff, members and the general public.

In part three, ClubTIC looks at some real life examples of how lives were saved using an AED.
