A new hotel school has been launched to address the national demand for a stronger tourism and hospitality workforce.

Tasmania’s Visitor Experience Training (VXT) had its new hotel school launched by Jeremy Rockliff, the Premier and Minister for Tourism and Hospitality last week.

Established on a $1 million grant from the Tasmanian government, VXT is an industry-led company jointly owned by the Tasmanian Hospitality Association and the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania, expressly created for the purpose of providing practical, job-ready training for the hospitality and tourism workforce to “deliver the Tasmanian experience”.

The sector employs one in eight Tasmanians, and with continued demand there is a need for the up-and-coming generation of workers to be well trained.

“We have committed $1.3 million through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future to support VXT to deliver short courses to upskill Tasmanians in areas such as housekeeping, food and beverage service, front-of-house training and bar operators,” said Premier Rockliff.

The Tasmanian Government is the most committed advocate in Australia for the tourism and hospitality industry.

Aside from this investment, the Tasmanian Government has invested a further $12 million into its Visitor Economy Strategy, along with a $50 million Regional Tourism Loan Scheme and a $500,000 Regional Hospitality Revival Fund.

“Building on Tasmania’s reputation as a world-leading tourism destination is an important part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, and we will continue to invest in this sector,” Premier Rockliff continued.

Executive Director of VXT Lisa Punshon told PubTIC that VXT is happy to accept students from outside of the state.

“The Hotel School in particular would be an amazing opportunity for somebody thinking of living and working in Tasmania to kick start their career,” she said.
