Police are investigating the discovery of a body found in a pond within the iconic The Lakes golf club, in Eastlakes.

Contractors carrying out a pest inspection are said to have found the body floating in water, thought to be a man, wearing black shorts and blue sneakers, in what is one of Sydney’s most exclusive golf clubs.

Authorities were called to the club around 9:30am (Wednesday, 9 August), and Marine Command were summoned to retrieve the corpse. Police divers floated it back to shore.

The man is yet to be formally identified, and information has not been released as to if the death is being treated as suspicious. Police speculate the deceased could have been in the pond several days.

As police cordoned off the scene and began forensic investigations, golfers reportedly continued playing games on the course, close by, likely unaware of exactly what was taking place.

A fellow course member, Local MP Ron Hoenig said in a statement it was “difficult for me to fathom” such a thing happening at the picturesque and historic site.

“Very sad to learn about the tragedy at The Lakes Golf Club in Eastlakes as a body was found in a pond,” said Hoenig. “My heart goes out to the man’s family.”
