Torquay residents came out in force to celebrate Torquay Bowls Club’s recent centenary.

The club has been located at Taylor Park since its inception in 1924, and quickly grew to be a strong community hub.

In celebration of the milestone, the club hosted an event that was completely free, including a barbecue lunch, live music, face painting and a visit from WildlifeXposure – a live wildlife display and education provider.

The celebrations began with a smoking ceremony for Welcome to Country, followed by speeches from the club’s committee members and a cake cutting ceremony.

In attendance were Richard Riordan, Member for Polwarth; Libby Coker, Corangamite federal member; and Surf Coast mayor Liz Pattison, along with regional and state bowls representatives.

Joe Issell, Torquay Bowls Club president, said he was pleased to honour past and present supporters and members on one of the busiest days for the club.

“Seeing so many young families, that was what was so pleasing. It’s a sign that this is a family place and something we pride ourselves on being here at the Torquay Bowls Club.

“The 100-year celebration was really about the people who were involved, and it all comes back to the community. It’s a real community hub today and we hope to remain one for the next 100 years.”

Over recent years the club has seen a significant growth in membership, which it attributes to its evening groups.

Torquay Bowls now ranks amongst the highest bowling memberships in Victoria.
