Seventy-nine years ago, on 1 September, the Mossman Memorial Bowls Club was formed in Far North Queensland.

Now, the club is one of the most successful sporting venues in the Douglas Shire and has rebranded to Club Mossman as part of a major expansion.

The first upgrade for the club in fifteen years, contractor Rubicon began works late last year, upgrading the club’s frontage, adding office space and expanding a gaming room to accommodate 44 machines.

While Cyclone Jasper caused a short delay to the project, plans are still underway for an upgrade to the function hall, adding an air-conditioned sports bar containing large screen TVs, a pool table and TAB.

Secretary manager Greg ‘Harry’ Potter told Cairns Local News the works were expected to be finished in December this year.

Further upgrades include the ability of the bistro to offer both dine-in and takeaway pizza; direct access from the car park to the synthetic green, and replacement lighting.

Chairman Bill Allison says a smaller function space would continue to be available for local community groups to hire.

Allison is confident visitors and locals alike will receive the rebranding and renovations well and continue to hold the venue in high regard.
