Craig Shannon has been appointed CEO of ClubsACT, replacing outgoing Chief Executive Gwyn Rees, who has been in the role for almost a decade.
ClubsACT represents the interests of ACT Community Clubs, with total assets valued at over $500 million, a workforce of more than 1700 and annual revenue of $274 million.
As CEO of ClubsACT, Craig will be directly accountable to the Board of ClubsACT and manage the operations and personnel of the industry body for Community Clubs in the ACT, with a budget of $800,000pa.
Craig was a former Canberra resident before moving to Western Australia, and was recently Senior Policy Advisor to WA Police Minister, The Hon Michelle Roberts MLA.
Craig’s other roles have included chair of Havelock Housing Association, one of Canberra’s largest not for profit social housing providers; Executive Director, People with Disabilities ACT; CEO of National Training Group; and Principal Industrial Officer at the Australian Federal Police Association.
“I am looking forward to returning to Canberra and taking up the opportunity of representing Canberra clubs to the industry stakeholders and the wider community,” Craig said.
“Clubs are the lifeblood of Canberra. The sporting, entertainment, social and cultural role they provide is a key foundation of our local community.
“The industry also has an important role as a significant local employer, especially in providing employment opportunities for Canberra’s young people.”
Craig starts his role at the end of this month following a handover period from Gwyn Rees.
Clubs ACT President Kim Marshall welcomed Craig’s appointment.
“His long-standing commitment to the Canberra community’s development, combined with his extensive advocacy and consultation skills, will add a significant boost to the positive enhancement of the ACT Club industry and the wider Canberra community.”
Kim also thanked Gwyn for his advocacy for ACT clubs and wished him well for his future.
