The celebrations have begun for Mackay City Bowls Club as the club celebrates a landmark 100 years of community bowling with a three-day event over the weekend.
One of the longest-running community sports clubs in the region, the Shakespeare Street club has evolved into a hub for both members and non-members, with its bar, pokies and dining and shaded undercover outdoor bowling green.
The centennial celebrations saw a who’s who of members, both past and present, on board to start the party with a wine and cheese soiree on Friday. The revelry continued Saturday with an afternoon of mixed competition and a formal dinner. The event culminated with 36 teams from around the area descending on the little club to compete across six different divisions, culminating in a barbecue and an exhibition.
With many regional sporting clubs suffering from diminishing player numbers in the wake of Covid, the weekend’s celebrations also provided a chance for the Greater Mackay community to join in and experience the enjoyable camaraderie of bowling.
