After more than a century catering to the community, the former Maitland Park Bowling Club has been destroyed in a fire.
The club building was constructed in the early 1900s and extended in the 70s. For more than 120 years it was leased as a bowling club, until its closure, in 2022.
Last month Maitland City Council were seeking input from commercial operators, stakeholders and the community to guide its decision on a potential adaptive reuse of the building and site.
But on Sunday, 16 July, a fire swept through the two-storey structure. A large section of the second floor roof collapsed, and only a shell of the former club remained.
A statement by Council noted it is aware of community interest and speculation on the cause of the fire, saying the matter is under investigation and the site has been handed to the insurer, with assessments underway.
“Once outcomes are known a decision will be made on the future of the building.
“Works are continuing on site to ensure public safety and prevent access.”
