86-year-old Douglas Arthur was crossing the floor of Glenroy RSL club, aided by a walking frame, when CCTV footage captured an offender approach and allegedly remove the wallet from Arthur’s back pocket.

The incident occurred at the Glenroy Road venue at around 3pm on 3 August, with further CCTV footage showing the accused leaving the scene in a black Honda Jazz soon afterwards.

The shocked grandfather had been unaware of the theft until he was shown the CCTV footage, but was left saddened that an incident like this could occur in what he considered a safe space.

Glenroy RSL President Ken White was among those in the local community shocked that an elderly person had been targeted, saying that the Glenroy RSL will contribute to community donations that have been raised for Mr Arthur, to ensure his wellbeing.

Following the disgraceful act, Victoria Police released the CCTV of the theft. Demonstrating the benefits of clubs providing adequate digital security, this led to detectives recovering the victim’s personal documents and cards during the execution of a search warrant at an address in Pascoe Vale.

The alleged perpetrator was arrested and charged with theft along with possession of a prohibited weapon and a drug of dependence. The accused will face Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on February 7, 2023.
