A 32-year-old man has been charged with criminal damage after allegedly setting bins on fire and damaging a wall at San Remo Bowling Club.

Club Secretary Greg Wood said club representatives were contacted by the fire department early on Sunday morning, February 14, wanting access to the club as a fire had been lit in the rubbish bins adjacent to the clubrooms.

Fortunately, the fire didn’t take hold of the building and no injuries were reported. But the bins were destroyed and a brick wall was also blackened by intense smoke and flames. The club’s front gate was also damaged.

Video cameras on the external walls of the club were activated and vision was retrieved and given to the police. A man was taken into custody soon after.

Power and damaged plumbing was checked and water damage and physical damage to the external end of the building and the bar door is being assessed by the club’s insurance company.

The man allegedly continued his attack over the next couple of hours with several other spot fires lit around town, police said.

The accused was remanded to appear at Korumburra Magistrates Court on March 4.
